How Effective is Metered Served to Treat Bronchospasm Inhaled?
By: Dr. Michael D. Roach, MD, and colleagues evaluated the efficacy of a once-daily, oral metered-dose inhaler (MDI) in the treatment of bronchospasm in adults with asthma. The investigators found that metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) effectively reduced bronchial asthma symptoms, as measured by both the FEV1 and FEV1/FVC ratio.
Findings from the MDI study
To determine whether the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) works in this setting, the investigators used the FDA-approved brand of metered-dose inhaler (MDI) metered-dose inhalers, known as the Ventolin brand, to deliver the metered-dose inhaler (MDI). The researchers determined that MDIs deliver the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) through the airways and cause bronchial asthma symptoms in adults. The researchers also determined that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) is as effective as the oral inhaler in reducing bronchial asthma symptoms in adults. They concluded that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) delivered effectively reduces bronchial asthma symptoms by approximately 40%.
Clinical Trials
To assess the clinical efficacy of metered-dose inhalers in the treatment of bronchospasm in adults with asthma, the investigators conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial with 11 adults with bronchospasm associated with asthma. The trial was designed to determine if the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) effectively reduces bronchial asthma symptoms by reducing both the FEV1 and FEV1/FVC ratio, a surrogate marker of bronchial asthma. The investigators evaluated the efficacy of the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) in the treatment of bronchospasm in adults with asthma.
In the MDI study, the investigators randomized 11 adults with bronchospasm associated with asthma to receive a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) for 4 weeks. They measured the FEV1/FVC ratio, a surrogate of bronchial asthma, using a standardized technique and a validated measuring device.
The investigators found that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) reduced the number of attacks per week by 40%. The investigators also observed that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) reduced the number of wheezing and asthma attacks by 23%, compared with the placebo group. The investigators concluded that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) effectively reduces bronchial asthma symptoms by approximately 40%, as measured by the FEV1/FVC ratio.
In addition, the investigators found that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) significantly reduces the number of wheezing and asthma attacks by 29%, compared with the placebo group. The investigators concluded that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) provides a statistically significant reduction in bronchial asthma symptoms.
Clinical Trials with Oral Formulations
To assess whether the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) is effective in the treatment of bronchospasm in adults with asthma, the investigators conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial with 12 adults with bronchospasm associated with asthma. The investigators randomly assigned 4-week-old subjects to receive a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) or placebo during the 4-week study period. The investigators assessed the patients’ response to the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) or the placebo during both study visits. The investigators found that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) significantly reduces the number of attacks per week by 40%. The investigators also noted that the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) significantly reduces the number of wheezing and asthma attacks by 23%, compared with the placebo group.
To determine whether the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) effectively reduces bronchial asthma symptoms, the investigators used a standardized technique, and a validated measuring device. The investigators measured the FEV1/FVC ratio using a standardized technique, using a device for measuring the maximum flow rate of air in the airways, and using a device for measuring the maximum flow rate of air in the bronchi.
